As someone who came out of graduate school wanting to go straight into Peace Corps, I've always looked at non profits with much hope and certainty in their implicated good will. I knew in my head that not everything is rosy with non profits or organizations that claim humanitarian values, but I developed this innate bias toward non profits or non governmental org's.
These past couple years have been a very real process of unlearning this bias. Corruption is so real - from Africa to Asia to right here in the East Coast. And it's been like being pulled out of a haze, coming from academia learning about world peace to working in the private sector but colliding with the public sector and groups that I would have been so gung ho about supporting.
In addition I've discovered a new sense of respect for those who aren't afraid of offending others if it means they are going to fulfill a greater goal for the betterment of everyone. What this comes down to is redefining my insight into people who "keep it real". :)
On a lighter note, I got an early flu this week and slept for two days straight. Been drinking lots of delicious homemade soups and not looking forward to another rainy weekend.
